at the gas pump this year? well, get ready to add insult to injury. at the time, california drivers were told that the price spikes were necessary to make up for refinery outages. but cbs 5 reporter grace lee found out that we may have been fooled. grace. >> reporter: dana, that is a possibility but we're not sure. that's one reason why they had a special senate committee hearing today and invited a research group that specializes in energy pricing and what they found was after months of research, they could not explain why we had those gas price hikes in may and in october. that's the mystery there. they can't explain it. but it did cost californians in october about $1 billion. >> reporter: when prices spiked at the gas station the 7 gas companies in california said it's not our fault. instead, they blamed accidents like the chevron refinery fire or unexpected maintenance problems. but the biggest price spikes were in may and october. that's months before and after the chevron fire in august. >> we have seen shifts in price of gasoline. >> reporter: it's one of the reason senator mark leno

, that's one of the mysteries of this election. anonymous donors playing big money in california politics. here's the story. >>> reporter: two conservative groups the virginia-based americans for job security and the center to protect patient rights in arizona collected $11 million and then handed it over to another arizona group, americans for responsible leadership who then sent it over the state line to groups opposed to proposition 30 governor brown's tax hike plan and to groups supporting proposition 32. the measure on tuesday's ballot would limit labor unions from raising and spending political money. as dan newman of the nonpartisan group explains -- >> that contribution came in about 2 weeks ago and as california voters have been casting their early ballots, they have been in the dark about this $11 million. >> reporter: most of the money went into a last-minute television and radio ad campaign. >> do you think we'll ever know the --who gave the $11 million? >> i don't know. >> reporter: this political science professor says no matter the legal outcome, a move like this damages el

of moisture stretching from the tropics across the pacific ocean into not northern california but the pacific northwest. there is a reason why it's due west of us then getting shoved up to the north. that reason is a large area of high pressure. kind of acting like a shield if you will not allowing that storm or any of the next several storms to get anywhere close to us. high pressure totally in control. there will be plenty of plenty of storms riding in. but great for tomorrow, shoppers getting good deals. saturday through tuesday we are talking about highs near 70 mainly sunny skies. only fly in the ointment is heat will be working overtime because clear nights will be chilly nights and especially north of the golden gate you may be foggy as well and some tule fog in the central valley as well over towards sacramento, south of bakersfield. livermore tomorrow, gorgeous. black friday, 70 degrees. 70 for san jose. redwood city 69. upper 60s for san rafael. san francisco, napa and vallejo. it's going to be beautiful outside tomorrow. saturday beautiful, sunday gorgeous. top of the next week kid
